Architecture, BSc (Hons)
Introduction
The BSc (Hons) Architecture Degree Show situates itself within the contested economic, social, cultural and environmental condition of the British seaside town utilising an exploration and development of architectural space to critique the relationship between Blackpool’s tourist and established populations.
In the first semester our students propose a Temple of Antitheses; a place of non-religious ceremony, sanctuary and memory that provides a place of respite and renewal from the extreme environments of Blackpool’s promenade. The second semester design project then asks the students to make their own souvenir using either traditional or emerging digital craft techniques and then design a building within which to make and present the proposed artefact. This project is used as a vehicle to explore the act of making as a socially and economically transformative act of empowerment within a marginalised community.
A graduating student from the Grenfell-Baines Institute of Architecture is equipped with an ability to use a creative and critical analysis of the world around them to propose and resolve complex architectural ideas. They are ambitious, talented, collaborative and engaged; with an understanding of how architecture can be utilised to tackle contemporary global issues at a local level.
